WSSX: View from Sarov

Chapter 3 of the book contains a paper by Vladimir Afanasiev of VNIIEF, Sarov, with an account of his Institute’s multifaceted collaboration on nuclear weapons safety. The printed version of the paper went through several edits that eventually compressed the original draft of dozens of pages and photographs into a more compact paper, at the expense of leaving out many photographs and a few story parts. We use the opportunity of the (relatively) unbounded online space to present two original pieces that the author offered as appendices to his main text.

The first piece uses photos and author’s commentary to personalize the record of the cooperation. You will meet leaders of the Soviet/Russian nuclear weapons complex who had the foresight and courage to support and promote the lab-to-lab interaction. You will also get a better sense of the hard work involved in steering the collaboration forward as well as the collegial nature of the interaction.

The second piece is an illustrated summary of RFNC-VNIIEF joint nuclear safety projects.
