From June 25-26, South Korea hosted a meeting of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization’s Group of Eminent Persons (GEM). CNS Director Dr. William Potter served as facilitator, and prepared the background paper for the meeting on “Contributions of the CTBT to the Resolution of Regional Nuclear Issues.”
Meeting participants included the CTBTO Executive Secretary Dr. Lassina Zerbo, former UK Defence Secretary Lord Des Browne, former IAEA International Atomic Energy Agency Director Hans Blix, and former United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Angela Kane. South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Yun Byung-se also met with the Group.
One highlight of the two-day event was a visit to the Demilitarized Zone or DMZ, the 38th parallel line that has served as the de facto border between the two Koreas since the end of the Korean War.
