On Monday, August 31, the Middlebury Institute for International Studies at Monterey and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies presented: “Assessing the Iran Nuclear Deal: A Conversation with Congressman Sam Farr and CNS/MIIS Experts.” Congressman Farr spoke about the importance of the Iran deal from a Congressional perspective. CNS Director Dr. William Potter provided an overview of Iran’s nuclear program and moderated a panel featuring Dr. Jeffrey Lewis, detailing on the deal’s verification provisions, and Professor Avner Cohen, who offered Israeli perspectives on the deal. Dr. Jeffrey Dayton-Johnson, MIIS Vice President for Academic Affairs, introduced the evening’s speakers.
Congressman Sam Farr’s initial reaction to the proposed multilateral agreement designed to restrain Iran’s nuclear weapon program was to look homeward to his district, which happens to include the Middlebury Institute, CNS, and our many high-profile nuclear nonproliferation experts. Monday evening, Farr offered his rationale for supporting the proposed deal and outlined the next steps of the approval process, before introducing the trio of CNS experts to an overflow crowd in the Institute’s Irvine Auditorium.
