On February 26, 2025, the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies(CNS) and Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) co-hosted a webinar entitled “Understanding the Emotional Dynamics of Nuclear Crises. Hosted by Syed Ali Zia Jaffery, CNS Graduate Research Assistant, the webinar featured a talk by Dr. Nicholas J. Wheeler, Professor of International Relations, University of Birmingham. Dr. Jeffrey Knopf, Professor and Chair, Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies Program, MIIS, acted as the discussant. The discussion centered on unpacking how emotional and psychological psychological factors could push leaders toward de-escalating nuclear-tinged crises.
