The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) held a high-level virtual event in cooperation with the CTBT Art. XIV Process Co-Chairs Algeria and Germany as well as the Provisional Technical Secretariat of the CTBTO.
The event included two panel discussions and highlighted the importance of the CTBT to national and international security as well as the non-proliferation regime and linkages between the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the CTBT. Panelists discussed the benefits states gain from the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty Organization’s (CTBTO) current activities in establishing and provisionally operating the Treaty’s verification regime, specifically highlighting related capacity building. Panelists also discussed existing challenges to the CTBT’s entry into force and how to overcome these obstacles. Recent developments and challenges in the establishment of the verification regime under the Treaty were examined.
