(Still) Preparing for the Tenth NPT Review Conference: Signature CNS Diplomatic Workshop Goes Virtual

On 10-11 June 2021, CNS and the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) conducted a diplomatic workshop on the preparations for the upcoming Tenth Review Conference of Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Traditionally held in person in Annecy, France, the workshop took place online due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The workshop brought together more than 60 senior diplomats, officials, and experts representing more than 40 states as well as nongovernmental and international organizations. UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu delivered opening remarks at the start of the meeting.

Workshop participants discussed a wide range of topics, including States Parties’ vision for the Tenth Review Conference and what would constitute its success, major substantive issues to be addressed, and factors that are likely to affect the debates. Among more specific topics the participants also discussed commitments adopted by past NPT Review Conferences, options for an outcome document and other products of the Conference, regional issues, and the role of civil society in the NPT review process. President-Designate of the Tenth NPT Review Conference Ambassador Gustavo Zlauvinen shared an update on his preparations and consultations with States Parties and answered participants’ questions at the close of the workshop.
