Abstract background with Contemporary Security PolicyJeff Knopf, chair of the MIIS M.A. program in Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies (NPTS), has published a journal article titled “Not by NPT alone: The future of the global nuclear order.” The article is part of a special issue of Contemporary Security Policy devoted to assessing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) 50 years after it entered into force in 1970. In the article, Dr. Knopf describes the international arrangements that have developed to try to limit the possibility of nuclear war and outlines how these arrangements have been eroding in recent decades. The article proposes some steps that can be taken in the short term to renew global awareness of the dangers posed by nuclear weapons as a way to prevent further erosion in the institutions that are intended to reduce the chances of nuclear weapons use.
