William Potter

During a break on the first day of the May session of the Open-Ended Working Group on Disarmament (OEWG) in Geneva, CNS Director Bill Potter heard his name called out. The source was none other than Ambassador Elayne Whyte Gomez, Costa Rica’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva and a graduate of MIIS.
Although few MIIS alumni have risen as rapidly as did Ambassador Whyte, who at age 35 was appointed vice foreign minister, many others are active diplomats engaged in nonproliferation and disarmament work. Among CNS alumni at the latest meeting of the OEWG were diplomats from Brazil, Japan, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe. A current CNS student also served on the Conference Secretariat, and at least two MIIS Translation & Interpretation students were servicing the conference as interpreters.
