Several events on the topic of maritime and sanctions compliance were hosted recently.
1. Maritime Sanctions Workshop in Nassau, Bahamas
April 26-27, 2023
On April 26 and 27, CNS, together with partner organizations VERTIC and King’s College London, and with the support of the U.S. Department of State, hosted a workshop on maritime sanctions in Nassau, Bahamas.
The workshop brought together government officials from countries in the Caribbean, representing flag registries, national regulators, corporate registries, and other relevant maritime authorities, as well as the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). It trained participants on the impact of sanctions on key stakeholders; sanctions evasion tactics; investigative tools and techniques, and best practices in sanctions enforcement. It also included tabletop exercises during which participants applied their newly acquired skills in investigating and preventing sanctions evasion. The event was led by Paulina Izewicz, Project Director for Maritime and Sanctions Compliance at CNS.
2. Russian Oil Price Cap – The Government Perspective – Roundtable Recap
May 23rd, 2023
On May 23, CNS, together with the U.S. Department of State and NorthStandard, hosted a roundtable discussion in Athens, Greece on the Russian oil price cap. The roundtable discussion went into detail on the operation of the price cap and considered the complex operational dilemmas faced by shipowners when engaging in price cap trades.
The event was attended by representatives from the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, and UK Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI).
On the CNS side, the event was led by Paulina Izewicz, Project Director for Maritime and Sanctions Compliance at CNS.

3. Maritime Trade Sanctions Compliance: Fact vs. Fiction

On May 18, Paulina Izewicz, Project Director for Maritime and Sanctions Compliance at CNS, spoke at the “Maritime Trade Sanctions Compliance: Fact vs. Fiction,” webinar. Hosted by the Association of Certified Sanctions Specialists (ACSS), the goal of the webinar was to breakdown the myths of sanctions compliance that vary across industries and regions, demystify the consequences of breaching sanctions, clarify what is necessary to include in the compliance process, and explain distinctions between US and EU sanctions programs.
The webinar went into detail about the perils of relying on supply chain partners to be within maritime trade compliance, the benefits of having a comprehensive sanctions screening program in place, regulatory differences in regions, and the top five aspects that create a complete sanctions compliance program.
