The James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. David A. Hamburg. Dr. Hamburg served as head of the Carnegie Corporation of New York from 1982 to 1997. Under his leadership, the foundation became a leading funder in the area of nuclear affairs and was instrumental in the development of the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program.
Dr. Hamburg was a founding member of the CNS International Advisory Board, and I was privileged to work with him on many issues of mutual interest, including nonproliferation and disarmament education. His powerful intellect, eagerness to engage on the key nuclear policy issues of the day, and gracious manner always made these interactions a particular pleasure.
He was a great friend of CNS on many levels, and his passing is a tremendous loss to the all those who shared his commitment to making the world safer and more secure for future generations.
