CNS Experts Observe the International Day Against Nuclear Tests by Raising Awareness about Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear Tests and Nuclear Weapons

On August 29, the world observes the International Day against Nuclear Tests and Kazakhstan commemorates the 32nd anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk Test Site where 456 nuclear tests were conducted. Today Kazakhstan hosted a regional conference on the topic “Humanitarian Consequences of Nuclear Weapons and Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (NWFZ) in Central Asia.”

CNS experts honored this day by raising awareness about humanitarian impacts of nuclear tests and nuclear weapons.

In her interview with The Astana Times, CBRN Security Program Director Margarita Kalinina-Pohl reflected on her personal experience of visiting the former Semipalatinsk Test Site and underscored the importance of nonproliferation education and training.

CNS Senior Project Manager Masako Toki co-moderated a webinar organized by the Black Sea Women in Nuclear Network on the topic “History Lesson. Never Again! Testimonials of an Atomic Bomb Survivor.” The webinar featured Hibakusha Ms. Masako Wada who shared her story and delivered a powerful message that nuclear weapons and humanity cannot coexist. Another speaker, Ms. Suzuka Nakamura, a granddaughter of an atomic bomb survivor, reflected on her experience of promoting the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Tokyo as a campaigner of The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
