CNS celebrated its 35th anniversary at a gala reception at the Tabard Inn in Washington, DC on October 21. In his opening remarks, CNS founding director Bill Potter reflected on the Center’s original and enduring mission of combatting the spread of weapons of mass destruction by training the next generation of specialists at home and abroad. He observed that this orientation was the touchstone by which CNS has charted its course since its founding in 1989. Indicative of the Center’s success in implementing its mission was the presence at the anniversary celebration of over five dozen alumni from over twelve different countries.
Highlights of the evening were toasts made by the gala’s MC Tom Blanton, Under-Secretary of State Bonnie Jenkins, and UN High Representative for Disarmament Izumi Nakamitsu, and presentations of “Unsung Hero” awards to CNS International Advisory Council member Cary Neiman and Carnegie Corporation of New York Program Officer Patricia Nicholas
In his closing remarks, Dr. Potter observed that at a time when the world was in such disarray, the presence of so many extraordinary young (and slightly older) alumni from around the world who were engaged in the business of nonproliferation and disarmament was uplifting and provided a much-needed glimmer of hope for our collective future.
