Black Lives Matter statement by CNS

Text only:

Since its inception, CNS has refrained from advocacy on policy issues. However, given the pattern of violence committed against people of color in America, highlighted by the heinous killing of George Floyd, we believe there is a moral imperative to state unequivocally that Black Lives Matter. We are in solidarity with peaceful protestors who seek to hold the government and nation accountable for systemic racism. Further, we strongly oppose the use of military force directed against civilians in the United States.

CNS recognizes its own responsibility to dismantle the systems of racism and inequality that have contributed to the oppression of people of color in America, and we are committed to identifying and taking concrete actions to remedy this situation as it pertains to nonproliferation education, training, and policy making.

As we examine our own shortcomings at individual, organizational, and disciplinary levels, we reiterate our commitment to becoming more effectively antiracist, and to promote equity, diversity, and inclusivity in all that we do, and especially as it relates to our mission of educating the next generation of nonproliferation specialists.
