A Message from CNS Director Bill Potter

December 19, 2023

A globe consisting of people.
There is a particular joy that comes with the privilege of being the founding director of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies. When students complete their studies at the Middlebury Institute or wrap up their projects as graduate research assistants at the Center, more often than not, I know that I will have the opportunity to work with them again. Whether it is as part of their country’s delegation to the Non-Proliferation Treaty conferences, or as international civil servants working in Vienna at the International Atomic Energy Agency or the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, or technical experts at a US national laboratory, the students and fellows who receive training here at CNS contribute directly to global efforts to stop the proliferation of the world’s deadliest weapons. I am enormously thankful for the privilege of playing a part in their training and subsequent career development.

At CNS, we are not simply training a new generation of nonproliferation specialists. We are cultivating a sustainable global community of dedicated, skilled, and internationally minded experts committed to promoting international peace and security. Watching this global community grow and thrive, even as our security challenges worsen, is a source of pride and optimism for me, as I hope it is for all our supporters.

As we look back on a year filled with so much violence and heartbreak, please consider supporting this global community of committed nonproliferation and disarmament students and professionals by making a contribution to CNS. Your donation directly supports both the cutting-edge research you read about every day as well as the training and education that keep the wheels of diplomacy turning even during its darkest days.

On behalf of our researchers, students, staff, and alumni, I thank you for your support. We pledge to do our part in making 2024 a much safer and more peaceful world.

With best wishes for the holiday season. Bill Potter
