A Full Spectrum Look at North Korea’s Nuclear Program: From Above, On the Ground, and In Person

November 21, 2022

CNS hosted an in-person seminar on November 17, 2022 featuring three of the world’s leading experts on the North Korean nuclear program: CNS and MIIS Professor Jeffrey Lewis, CNS and MIIS Distinguished Professor Practice Siegfried Hecker, and CNS Distinguished Non-Resident Scholar Robert Carlin.

The seminar was unusual as it examined the DPRK’s nuclear program from three different perspectives—from above (i.e., using satellite imagery as interpreted by Jeffrey Lewis), on the ground (based on Siegfried Hecker’s numerous visits to North Korean nuclear facilities), and in person (drawing on Robert Carlin’s long-time government career in which he frequently interacted with North Korean officials during many visits to the DPRK.

The three presentations demonstrated the power of the viewing North Korea’s nuclear program from a multi-spectrum perspective and highlighted the unusual and diverse pool of expertise on the subject associated with CNS.
