A Challenged but Unbroken Nuclear Order

May 14, 2025

In a recent episode of Uppsala University’s Researching Peace Podcast, CNS Professor of the Practice Dr. Stephen Herzog discussed the overall health of the global nuclear order with host Joakim Palmén. The episode was produced in cooperation with the Alva Myrdal Centre for Nuclear Disarmament. It covered the impact of the Russo–Ukrainian War on nuclear arms control and nonproliferation, the durability of the “nuclear taboo,” the future of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), and opportunities for China to play a larger role in international nuclear politics. Despite the dominance of pessimism in most assessments of the nuclear order, Dr. Herzog suggested that there are actually reasons for tempered optimism moving forward.
