June 29, 2026
It is with a deep sense of loss that we observe the passing of CNS colleague and friend Dr. George Moore on June 23, 2026. George was a remarkable individual, equally at home in a cockpit, classroom, courtroom, and nuclear laboratory.
Prior to joining CNS as a Scientist-in-Residence in 2012, he enjoyed a distinguished and wide-ranging career at the International Atomic Energy Agency, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the U.S. Navy, among other institutions. He worked as a member of the Department of Energy’s elite Nuclear Emergency Support Team, assisted INTERPOL in training prosecutors, police, and security forces to enhance global nuclear security and counterterrorism efforts, and served as an aviation legal expert for Plane & Pilot magazine—and these were just a sampling of his many pre-MIIS professional activities.
His unique combination of multidisciplinary training and practical experience made George an exceptional teacher and mentor. At MIIS, he was instrumental in setting up the Prague Practicum, an intensive experiential-learning program at the Czech Technical University (CTU) that enabled students to acquire hands-on work at CTU’s research reactors. He also played a key role in organizing an annual international safeguards course at MIIS for young and mid-career professionals.
George’s enthusiasm for whatever subject he addressed was contagious, and he loved to share his technical expertise and experiences with his students on such diverse topics as nuclear forensics, drones, and nuclear safeguards. He was a true renaissance man, whose readiness to help his students and colleagues will be missed by all.
