The CNS International Advisory Council met in Washington, DC on October 21st for its annual meeting. The Council welcomed new members Mr. Louis Salkind (President, Bright Horizon Foundation) and the Honorable Daniel Poneman (former Acting Secretary of Energy and Centrus Energy Corp. CEO).
During its public session, the Council focused on the issues of “The Impact of the War in Ukraine on the Nuclear Order,” “The Impact of AI on Nuclear Issues,” and “Is the NPT Fit for Purpose?” Speakers included both CNS experts (Dr. Hanna Notte, Professor Siegfried Hecker, Mr. Yanliang Pan, Professor Jeffrey Lewis, and Dr. Natasha Bajema) and policy practitioners Mr. Cyrus Jabbari (DOD), UN High Representative for Disarmament Izumi Nakamitsu, Austrian Ambassador Alexander Kmentt, and U.S. Ambassador Adam Scheinman. CNS was honored to have Under-Secretary of State Bonnie Jenkins deliver the keynote luncheon address on the Biden administration’s approach to contemporary nuclear challenges. Middlebury College President Laurie Patton also addressed the Council virtually and praised the Center for its long and enduring commitment to make the world a safer place.
Dr. Bill Potter presided over the Council session. He observed the unusual presence at the meeting of five former heads of the U.S delegation to the NPT review process.
