CNS is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ambassador Sergio Duarte, an extraordinarily accomplished diplomat, champion of nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation, and friend of CNS. Ambassador Duarte is perhaps best known for his presidency of the 2005 NPT Review Conference but also served as Brazil’s ambassador to many countries and several international organizations. In addition, he was the United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs and the President of Pugwash.

In addition to his multifaceted career in international diplomacy, Ambassador Duarte also enjoyed writing poetry and translating literature. CNS experts were privileged to work with him over many years and to host him at meetings in Monterey and other venues. He was the epitome of a gentleman diplomat and very kind individual.

Bill Potter
Director, CNS
