Shizuka Kuramitsu
Shizuka Kuramitsu, MANPTS 2023, was featured in the NHK’s Science & Culture Journal in conjunction with the G7 Hiroshima Summit that took place on May 19 -21, 2023. Given that the summit was held in one of the only two cities that were devastated by the US atomic weapons in August 1945, there was a lot of attention being paid to messages G7 leaders were announcing in regards to nuclear disarmament.
Shizuka Kuramitsu is originally from Hiroshima and is about to complete her Master’s degree on Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. Shizuka’s feature in the NHK’s Science & Culture Journal highlights her motivation, experience, and future aspirations.
Shizuka participated in CNS’s flagship disarmament and nonproliferation education project for high school students, Critical Issues Forum, in Hiroshima in 2015 as a representative of Hiroshima Jogakuin Senior High School. Her school is well-known for its active and vigorous peace and disarmament education program and is also the alma mater of Ms. Setsuko Thurlow, one of the most vocal Hibakushas and Nobel peace award recipient along with the International Campaign for Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) in 2017.
Throughout her studies and activities for nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation, Shizuka has come to learn that accomplishing a world free of nuclear weapons is long like a “marathon.” However, her determination to continue to work toward that goal has never been swayed by obstacles.
