I have witnessed many egregious acts of violence over the years directed against U.S. political figures and institutions, but none have so directly challenged the foundations of our political system as the events of January 6th. The seditious acts inspired by an unrepentant president are repugnant and must be repudiated if we are ever to achieve social justice and restore basic decency in our fragile and fraying democracy. In this regard, I reaffirm our commitment at CNS to stand with partner organizations in combatting racism and discrimination through structural and institutional change.
I pledge that CNS will do its part to initiate and sustain a broad discussion of the sources of the violence we observed on January 6th and the double standard that was displayed toward people of color in the muted response to the attack on our capitol. We must not be complacent in the face of existential threats of which, regrettably, the number is growing.
