Challenges and Prospects for the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone

Thirty-four years after the accident and subsequent meltdown of the reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (formerly the Soviet Union), wildfires engulfed the areas in and near the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, the 19-mile-wide uninhabited zone surrounding the plant. On May 27, CNS Senior Program Manager Margarita Kalinina-Pohl led a webinar examining the challenges facing the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, how it is currently managed by authorities in Ukraine, and prospects for its revitalization. It also included findings of the recent CNS report, Assessing Fire Damage in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
